2009 GLR Encampment - Michigan Wing - Civil Air Patrol - July 18 - 25, 2009
Cadet Commander's Welcome PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the encampment website! I hope everyone is making their way over to the registration link and getting all their paperwork turned in. This year's encampment is going to be a memorable one. I would like to take a few lines to introduce myself and my staff.

I am C/Capt Geoff Gloceri, the cadet Wing Commander of the encampment. My job is to supervise all of the basic cadets and my staff throughout the planning stages and the duration of encampment. I have been in Civil Air Patrol for almost 9 years and have attended 6 encampments.

My Deputy Wing Commander is C/Maj Bernadette Bacero. She is in charge of supervising the squadron staff and ensuring that communication is flowing smoothly throughout the chain of command.

My Executive Officer is C/2d Lt Michelle Neuville. Her job is overseeing all of the inspections and planning the graduation 'Pass In Review' parade that will happen at the end of the week. My staff and I have been busy working since December to make this year's encampment a success. We have a lot of neat activities planned for you. Some of the highlights of the week may include an orientation flight in a glider and a powered aircraft, rappelling, a weapons demonstration by USAF Security Forces, a fire demonstration by the USAF Firefighters, and many other things that you can't do anywhere else.

My basic encampment was in 2002 and it was the best experience in Civil Air Patrol that I had ever had. It is what made me continue to stay in the program and advance my leadership and stay motivated. I would not be here right now if I didn't attend my basic encampment. At times the days will seem long and tough, but I assure you, by the end of the week you will not want to go home. You will meet cadets from all around the state and all around the country. You will make friendships that will last for a lifetime and have experiences you will never forget. I urge each and every one of you to attend this year's encampment and make it the highlight of your summer and your CAP career.

Like most people who have attended multiple encampment say, come join us back home in Alpena this summer. We’re looking forward to having you!

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

Further updates to this site will be made daily

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2009 Great Lakes Region-North/Michigan Wing Summer Encampment!

The application can be downloaded from this website using the Registration Info link.   Fill your application out completely, and return it to the address listed, along with the registration fee.  The fee for this year’s encampment is $230.00.  As an alternative, those wishing to pay by PayPal can do so by following the instructions on the website, which will be available Monday, June 1.  Please be advised that there is an additional processing fee charged by PayPal.

Your encampment leadership understands that times are tough due to the economic state here in Michigan.  Financial assistance is available for FIRST TIME CADETS with a demonstrated need.  To apply for assistance, please send letters of request from the cadet or parent, and the cadet’s unit commander to Capt Dave Watts, CAP by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or by USPS to Capt Dave Watts, 4710 Clearwater Dr, Metamora, MI 48455.  Please direct all scholarship questions to Capt Watts.  We regret that assistance is not available for cadets returning for staff or CLS.  Please contact Capt Watts, or Maj Christina Watts, commandant of cadets ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) of you are a returning cadet and need suggestions for sources of funding.

Some other notes:

·         The prestigious GLR-N Cadet Leadership School will run concurrent to encampment.  Applications must be received by the date indicated in the flyer, there will be no walk-ins accepted for CLS.  To help cover the additional costs of running the school (administrative, supplies, etc), the CLS will cost $240.00.  See the application packet for additional information.

·         The MIWG Model Rocketry Encampment will be celebrating it’s seventh year in 2009.  Cadets attending will complete all requirements for the CAP Model Rocketry Program, and will be eligible to earn the model rocketry badge upon completion.  Model rocketry is also available for senior members who wish to learn the program so that they may administer the program at their home squadron.  Due to the additional supplies needed, the cost for MRE will be $295.00.

·         Senior member professional development will be offered during the encampment.  Courses and costs will be announced at a later date.

·         Cadet support staff information is contained within the flyer as well.

As a reminder, the encampment will be held from 18-25 July, 2009 at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.  Unless you are serving in a staff capacity, you are expected to report at 0800 on Saturday, 18 July.  If you are a staff member  (senior or cadet) please report on Friday, 17 July, no later than 1300.  There are many objectives that need to be met that day, so please show up prepared and ready to go to work.

Anyone other than cadet or senior staff that for some reason needs to arrive prior to 0800 on 18 July MUST OBTAIN PRIOR APPROVAL.  If you require such approval please email the encampment commander, Maj Jonathan Reid at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , to obtain approval.  Approval will only be granted if transportation arrangements preclude a Saturday arrival for anyone not on cadet staff.  The reasons for this limitation is simple -- we do not have the buildings and resources to house and feed people that we don't know are coming early.

Please contact us if we can be of any assistance!

We look forward to seeing your applications very soon, and to seeing all of you in Alpena!

Regards,

Jonathan Reid, Maj, CAP

Commander
